Welcome to the Classics section. Every week, we revisit two Hindi songs… one from the Pre-90s era and one from the Post-90s.
Today, we look at the life lessons in Sab Kuch Seekha Humne and the crazy love in Tu Mere Saamne. These two songs take us from the sarcastic, harsh reality of the 50s to the high-energy, “mad love” of the early 90s. While one talks about learning the ways of a double-faced world, the other celebrates a love that knows no limits.
Sab Kuch Seekha Humne – Anari (1959)
Singer: Mukesh Music Director: Shankar Jaikishan Lyricist: Shailendra
The Hard Truths of Life
This song is special because of how it uses sarcasm to talk about sad things. Shailendra’s lyrics beautifully show the difficult parts of living in this world… from heartbreak to meeting people with two faces and seeing people choose the wrong priorities.
The music by Shankar Jaikishan and the voice of Mukesh do full justice to these words. Also, Raj Kapoor’s emotive face makes the song even better. It explores the harsh realities of life with deep feelings, and Raj Kapoor’s expressions perfectly match the soulful voice of Mukesh.

Tu Mere Saamne – Darr (1993)
Singers: Udit Narayan, Lata Mangeshkar Music Director: Shiv-Hari Lyricist: Anand Bakshi
The Melody of Mad Love
I really love the music arrangement at the start of Tu Mere Saamne. While Lata Mangeshkar’s voice is lovely, for me, this is a total Udit Narayan song. The melody by Shiv-Hari and the lyrics by Anand Bakshi work so well, even though they are a bit “over the top.” It really brings out the feeling of “mad love.”
This is one of Shah Rukh Khan’s best performances. He is perfect at showing the expressions of a lover who is losing his mind. Interestingly, if you watch the video carefully, Shah Rukh’s clothes never change, but Juhi Chawla’s clothes change many times throughout the song. It captures an obsessive love through a haunting melody that stays in your head.
iss kahani ke sau saal hai, iss jawani ke sau saal hai.. yeh tere pyaar ke chaar pal, zindagani ke sau saal hai…
