Welcome to the Classics section. Every week, we revisit two Hindi songs… one from the Pre-90s era and one from the Post-90s.
Today, we bridge the gap between the golden era of the 60s and the nostalgic 2000s with two tracks that define ‘longing’ in very different ways.
1. Lag Jaa Gale – Woh Kaun Thi (1964)
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Music Director: Madan Mohan
Lyricist: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan
There is a reason this song is considered immortal. Lata Mangeshkar’s beautiful voice makes this track a perfect combination of romance and sadness. It captures that specific, haunting fear of losing a close one, creating a feeling that stays with you long after the song ends.
Jee bharke dekh lijiye humko kareeb se, Phir aapke naseeb mein yeh baat ho na ho…

2. Jaane Kaise – Raqeeb (2007)
Singer: KK
Music Director: Pritam Chakraborty
Lyricist: Sameer
A melodious track powered by the incredible vocals of KK, this song instantly brings back memories of college days. It reminds me of those times I would bunk classes and travel in an altogether different world while listening to this on loop. I personally feel that if you are in love, this song makes an even deeper impression on you.
Gujra nahi tha main toh kabhi bhi pyaar ki dilkash raahe guzar se,
Deewangi ki yeh inteha hai har chehre mein chehra tera…
