Amar reading the sand message left by Meghna in the Dil Se intermission scene.

Scene Decode: Amar’s Heartbreak and the Sand Message in Dil Se (1998)

If you know me, you know Dil Se is one of my absolute favorite movies. When it comes to my favorite movie moment, the Dil Se intermission scene easily takes the top spot.. It is not the famous ‘duniya ki sabse choti prem kahani’ at the railway station. It is also not Amar’s reaction when Meghna returns to his life just when he is about to get engaged to Preeti.

My favorite is the back-to-back scene right at the intermission.

A Light Talk With Deep Meaning

The whole feeling is set up during a very light romantic scene. It starts with Amar (Shahrukh Khan) and Meghna (Manisha Koirala) having a conversation to understand each other’s likes and dislikes. If you pay full attention, there is a lot happening and being said without the other person realizing it. For instance, when Meghna tells him what she does not like, she is actually talking about what she misses in her own personality. She is talking about what she never had because of her sad childhood.

On the other hand, Amar tells her what he dislikes about her:

Hum dono ke beech ki yeh doorie
Tumhare andar jo yeh bahut kuch chupa hua hai
Aur sabse buri tumhari yeh aankhein,
kitna bhi main inmein dekhna chahun mujhe kuch dikhta hi nahi hai.

Amar looking at Meghna and talking about her eyes in the romantic scene of Dil Se.
Amar telling Meghna what he likes and dislikes about her eyes.

Then, he starts telling her what he likes about her by repeating the exact same three points! He says, “Mujhe sabse jyada pasand tumhari yeh aankhein hai kyunki inmein jitna bhi main dekhna chahun mujhe kuch dikhta hi nahi hai.” The beautiful ‘Satrangi Re’ background theme plays right when he starts mentioning his likes. This makes the moment even more special.

The Message in the Sand

This excellent setup is the reason why the next scene hits so hard. This is my top personal favorite. After chasing Meghna for a long time, Amar finally had that close talk with her the night before. He probably thought that things were finally coming together between them. But in the morning, he wakes up to find her missing. She leaves a message for him on the sand that reads:

Kuch log reth par likhe naamo ki tarah hote hai,
Hawa ka ek jhonka jinhe uda le jaata hai

Then, the exceptional ‘Sitaron se aage jahan aur dikhe’ background music starts playing. Amar shows his anger by destroying all the words on the sand. At the exact same time, the movie cuts to Meghna, and we learn her true, scary identity right before the word ‘Intermission’ appears on the screen.

Why This Dil Se Intermission Scene Is Pure Brilliance

The music by A.R. Rahman plays a huge role in making this Dil Se intermission scene so powerful. When you hear the background score change, you can truly feel Amar’s world falling apart. He thought he had finally won her trust, but instead, he is left completely alone on that huge, empty beach. The way the camera captures his deep pain while he destroys the sand message is just amazing to watch. It is a moment of pure heartbreak.

I would have got goosebumps during this scene if I had seen this movie in the theater. It is pure movie brilliance! Everything is perfect, from the writing of those romantic dialogues, to the way the music is used, to the heartbreak dialogue, and finally the big reveal with the wonderful theme track. And of course, the acting from both Shahrukh and Manisha is top-notch here.

Unfortunately, the exact scene I am talking about is not available on YouTube, so I have only shared the romantic scene right before it. I hope someone from the production team uploads it in the future!
