Ranbir Kapoor as Jordan looking sad in the Rockstar best scene.

Scene Decode: Jordan’s Heartbreaking And Empty Fame in Rockstar (2011)

If you are looking for the Rockstar best scene, this one is an absolute masterpiece. The scene starts with Jordan singing, “Duniya ne humko diya kya, duniya se humne liya kya…” This was the most famous angry song from Hare Rama Hare Krishna long before Sadda Haq came to life.

It is a perfect setup for the main scene when Khatana arrives to pull Jordan out of a brothel.

A Warning Ignored

Khatana is furious that he has to come to a place like this to find him. He warns Jordan, “Shuru hone se pehle hi khatam ho jayega tu, meri baat yaad rakhna.” (You will be finished before you even start, remember my words.)

He adds, “Tujhe pata bhi nahi chalega, kab log tujhse nafrat karne lagenge.” (You won’t even realize when people will start hating you.)

Khatana questioning Jordan in the Rockstar best scene.
“Kya ho gaya hai tujhe JJ, dekh khud ko…” Khatana tries to make Jordan see what he is becoming.

Why This is Rockstar Best Scene

One of the main reasons why I find this rockstar best scene from the movie is the beauty of this moment as how casually Jordan talks to Khatana on the roadside while fans gather for his photo. Long before Jordan finally says, “Khushi dur dur tak nahi hai…” (Happiness is nowhere to be found), you can feel his pain.

Ever since his fallout with Heer, that emptiness has been there. We saw all his anger come out during the whole Sadda Haq phase, but that angst did not fix anything. He finally lets his true, broken feelings out to Khatana, who sadly has no answers for him.

I also love the editing here. The director mixes two views: the real conversation happening between them, and the point of view (POV) of a fan recording them on a phone. It brilliantly shows the huge gap between Jordan’s sad reality and what the world sees. While his heart is breaking on the inside, his fans only see a superstar they want a picture with.

“Main khud apne aap ko acha nahi lagta…
Mujhe khush nahi hona chahiye…
Yehi sab chahta tha na main…
Magar khushi toh dur dur tak nahi hai, kahin nahi hai.”

After Jordan pours his heart out, he realizes Khatana will never truly understand. The scene then cuts straight to a beautiful shehnai instrumental. This was a fantastic choice. A shehnai is usually played at weddings and happy moments, but here, it sounds like it is crying for Jordan’s lost soul.

It is rare to see a scene with so many emotional layers. It perfectly shows how empty Jordan feels despite getting all the fame he ever wanted.
