Classic Songs Sunday: Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon (1949) and Satrangi Re (1998)

Welcome to my Classics section. Every week, I revisit two Hindi songs… one from the Pre-90s era and one from the Post-90s.

Today, I look at the fun mood of Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon and the intense magic of Satrangi Re. These two tracks take me from the playful romance of the late 40s to the deep feelings of the late 90s. While one makes you smile with its catchy tune, the other takes you through the seven stages of love.

Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon – Patanga (1949)

Singer: Shamshad Begum, Chitalkar Ramchandra
Music Director: Chitalkar Ramchandra
Lyricist: Rajinder Krishan

A Fun and Smiling Track

Shamshad Begum’s voice is again so good to listen to. This is another of her enjoyable tracks that has fun lyrics and a tune that brings a smile to your face. Chitalkar gives good support with the male voice, but I would still have preferred a solo Shamshad track here.

tum bin saajan, January Febuary ban gaye,
May aur June…

Satrangi Re – Dil Se (1998)

Singers: Sonu Nigam, Kavita Krishnamurthy
Music Director: A R Rahman
Lyricist: Gulzar

The 7 Stages of Love

This is one of the best-choreographed songs ever. It brilliantly shows the seven stages of love. The entire album is a gem, but this song is something special. Rahman and Gulzar are on a totally awesome level here.

You can notice that in the entire song, Shahrukh Khan is seen in black clothes. It is only at the very end that he is in white because he has finally reached the last stage of love, which is death.

teri raahon mein uljha uljha hoon,
teri baahon mein uljha uljha..
suljhaane de hosh mujhe,
teri chaahon mein uljha hoon…
