Bloody Daddy Movie Review: An Entertaining, Fun Yet Flawed Action Ride

(Spoilers ahead…)

Before we get into the story for my Bloody Daddy movie review, I want to say that this film completely surprised me with how funny it actually is and I mean intentionally here.

Plot of Bloody Daddy: Kidnapping and Total Chaos

The story happens in New Delhi and Gurugram right after the second wave of Corona. Sumair (Shahid Kapoor) steals a bag of drugs one morning at Connaught Place. The bag belongs to Sikandar Chowdhary (Ronit Roy), the owner of a fancy 7-star hotel called ‘Emerald Etlantis’.

To get it back, Sikandar kidnaps Sumair’s son, Atharv (Sartaaj Kakkar). He tells Sumair to return the bag if he wants his son back. What happens next is total madness. The hotel is hosting a big wedding, and the famous singer ‘Baadshah’ is there to perform.

Dark Comedy and Corona Jokes Hit the Mark

The dark comedy and funny lines are the first things I enjoyed about this movie. They even make jokes about Corona. In a great short role, Hameed (Sanjay Kapoor) says the drugs are actually flour. His helper then asks him to smell it to check if he has lost his sense of smell because of Corona.

There is also a funny “Corona go, go, go Corona” chant in one scene. It will remind you of the plate-banging days of the lockdown. The movie uses this very well to help Sumair run away.

The Mystery Around Sumair Works Well

Because there is no backstory, Sumair is a big mystery. At first, you do not even know if he is a real police officer. Even when you find out he is a cop, you cannot tell if he is a good guy or just another bad cop trying to steal the bag. This mystery works very well for the movie.

We also learn a little about Sumair’s past with his wife and son in just one simple scene. Atharv is clearly unhappy with their fake vacation at the Gurugram hotel.

Ronit Roy brings a lot of fun to the movie as the bad guy in a red jacket.

Shahid Kapoor Exceeds Expectations in Action

In an action role, Shahid Kapoor is even better than what the trailer showed. I would not be surprised if he does more action roles like this in the future. In fact, I feel this movie has good potential of turning into a big series. This angry role is a huge change from his emotional acting that I talked about in my Jersey movie review, but it suits him perfectly.

His comic timing has always been good. Just watch his face when he finds out the guy standing next to him has Corona. The way he quickly puts on his mask and looks at him is very funny. He also has a great reaction when his son asks for lactose-free milk and gluten-free bread with avocado. He simply tells his son to just eat air!

Rajeev Khandelwal almost steals the show in every scene, even when he is bleeding!

Ronit Roy and Rajeev Khandelwal Steal the Show

Ronit Roy is super good in this film. He wears a red jacket, smokes cigars, and says his lines like he is having a lot of fun. It is great to watch him. He has two main scenes that stand out. In one scene, he speaks for the hotel workers who suffered during Corona, while also talking about his drug business. In the other scene, he tries to make a sad bride feel better by simply saying, “Baadshah is here.”

I am also so happy that Rajeev Khandelwal got such a good role. He almost steals the show every time he comes on the screen. He plays a shady character who uses a lot of bad words, but he is brilliant. The supporting actors like Zeishan Quadri, Vivan Bhatena, Suparna Moitra, Vikram Mehra, Mukesh Bhatt, and Ankur Bhatia did a very good job too.

Writing Flaws and Average Action Scenes

I just have one complaint. The writers annoyed me by giving Rajeev the same lines again and again. He keeps saying things like “You go” or “I will handle it” just to send the other police officer, Aditi (Diana Penty), away from the case.

The other letdown for me was the action. The fights were not as good as movies like John Wick. They were not bad, but they could have been a lot better. I actually liked the talking scenes between the fights much more than the fights themselves. Julius Packiam impresses me again with his background music. The main theme song plays throughout the movie and fits perfectly with Shahid Kapoor’s angry walk.

A rare happy moment between Sumair and his son at the end of the chaos.

Bloody Daddy Review : Final Verdict

To wrap up, Bloody Daddy is a fun and entertaining action movie, but it falls just short of being brilliant.

My Rating: 7/10
