Welcome to my Classics section. Every week, I revisit two Hindi songs… one from the Pre-90s era and one from the Post-90s.
Since it is raining heavily today, there is no better time to revisit two of my favorite monsoon tracks. Today, I look at the fun and playful vibe of Dum Dum Diga Diga and the slightly sad, emotional feel of Barsaat Ke Mausam Mein. These two tracks take you from the classic black-and-white era of the 60s to the melodious 90s. While one makes you want to dance in the rain, the other is perfect for listening to while watching the rain fall from your window.
Dum Dum Diga Diga – Chhalia (1960)
Singer: Mukesh
Music Director: Kalyanji-Anandji
Lyricist: Qamar Jalalabadi
A Fun Dance in the Rain
This is a very simple-looking song that works perfectly for a classic rain track. It is sung beautifully by Mukesh, and Raj Kapoor’s amazing screen presence makes it even better. There is a fun, joyful vibe throughout the entire track that always brings a smile to my face.

Barsaat Ke Mausam Mein – Naajayaz (1995)
Singers: Kumar Sanu, Roop Kumar Rathod
Music Director: Anu Malik
Lyricist: Sudarshan Faakir
A Beautifully Sad Monsoon Melody
Despite not being someone who drinks (or haven’t in past 10 years), this is a song that I totally love. That says a lot about the magic of great music! It is always my first go-to song when the monsoon season arrives. Both Kumar Sanu and Roop Kumar Rathod sing wonderfully in a track that has a slight sad feel to it. Anu Malik’s music composition here is simply beautiful.
mujhe tukdo mein nahi jeena hai, qatra qatra toh nahi pina hai
ho aaj paimaaney hata do yaaro, haan saara maikhana pila do yaaro
maikadon mein toh piya karta hoon, chalti raahon mein bhi pi lene do…
