Classic Songs Sunday: Babuji Dheere Chalna (1954) and Juda Hoke Bhi (2005)

Welcome to my Classics section. Every week, I revisit two Hindi songs… one from the Pre-90s era and one from the Post-90s.

Today, I look at the gentle warning of Babuji Dheere Chalna and the deep heartbreak of Juda Hoke Bhi. These two tracks takes you from the classic black-and-white era of the 50s to the painful memories of the 2000s. While one warns you to be careful in a dark world, the other beautifully expresses the pain of losing a loved one.

Babuji Dheere Chalna – Aar Paar (1954)

Singer: Geeta Dutt
Music Director: O.P. Nayyar
Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri

A Warning About the Dark World

This is a true classic. The song is beautifully shot, showing how the character has fallen into darkness and is trying to find her way out. All the while, she is warning the listener about this dark and cruel world that you have to be careful about. It is a lovely composition, and Geeta Dutt completely nails the vocals.

yeh toh babuji pehla kadam hai,
nazar aate hai apne paraye…

Juda Hoke Bhi – Kalyug (2005)

Singer: Atif Aslam
Music Director: Jal / Mithun Sharma
Lyricist: Sayeed Quadri

Unleashing the Pain Inside

For me, this is easily the best song by Atif Aslam. The theme of losing a loved one, remembering the good and bad times, and feeling the deep pain is very common in our movies. But here, the execution works so well, both visually and in the audio. The brilliant composition makes it stand out.

Also, this was Kunal Khemu’s debut movie as a lead actor. The long high note (alaap) near the end of the song is my favorite part. It always gives me the feeling of letting all the hidden anger and hurt out loudly.

dil se dhadkan bhula dena, aasan nahi hai..
ab toh aadat si hai mujhko aise jeene mein…
